The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament Joseph Osei Owusu has described as ignorant and irresponsible attacks being waged by the opposition NDC against impeachment processes commenced against the EC Chair Madam Charlotte Osei.

The embattled chair of the Electoral Commission together with her two deputies Georgina Opoku Amankwah and Sule Amadu have been referred to an inquisitorial committee set up by the Chief Justice Sofia Akuffo.

It follows two separate petitions forwarded to the President Nana Addo demanding Madam Charlotte Osei’s impeachment on stated grounds of incompetence and failure to follow procurement procedures.

This has however generated some heated criticisms from the opposition NDC which suspects the President and the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) have an interest in removing Charlotte Osei from Office.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Ultimate News’ Ivan Heathcote – Fumador, the First Speaker of Parliament insisted that such arguments are unfounded and a product of irresponsibility and ignorance.

He inquired, ‘What are they complaining about. That because the person is called Charlotte Osei, the laws of Ghana should not apply to her? There are three people being investigated and why are they singling out one? Is it a case that they have a special interest hoping that if she is retained, she will give them advantage in elections?’.

‘As for the speculation and the President is this and the President is that, what if the President is interested? So what? If she is truly alleged to have misappropriated the funds, why shouldn’t the President be interested? Aren’t we the ones charging the President to ensure that corruption is abated?.

“But in this case the law says that if the petition comes to you, forward to the Chief Justice, it is the Chief Justice who will determine whether there is a basis for investigation or not and not the President. For the people saying that, either they are plainly irresponsible or mischievous. They are either not reading the law or they are not reading it right or they are just being irresponsible,” he fumed.

He insisted that media houses refused to rebroadcast “irresponsible communication” to save the country a polluted political atmosphere.
