A huge fire has torn through about 10 vehicles in a mechanic shop and has ended up gutting about 15 spare part shops at Magazine New-Road in the Ashanti Region.

Personnel from the Ghana Fire Service came to put out the blaze that started as "small fire from burning rubbish".

The fire, according to eyes witness started around 22:28GMT Saturday night and got the shops and cars totally burnt "in a matter of an hour."

The fire from a small heaped rubbish spread to nearby shops and torn its way through packed vehicles and totally burnt down the shops, causing total black out to the area.

Speaking to ghanaguardian, the Assembly man for the Tafo Nhyaiso electoral area,Alhaji Bashiru Gambo, says the fire has already caused huge damages before the arrival of fire fighters.

"It started as small fire for from burning rubbish and  spread through to the near by shop where vehicles were packed with fuel, Alhaji Bashiru Gambo said.

"You know we are in a dry season and so it spread fast to the other shops. It was absolute chaos, you couldn't see anything from the smoke, the fire was really ferocious.

Most shops owners at Magazine close their shops at around 17:00 GMT and hence a prompt response to a midnight fire outbreak could be slow.

According to Alhaji Bashiru the fire had caused damages before the arrival of the fire service personnel but added that things could have gone worse than what was seen.

"Things had gone out of control before the Fire Service arrived,"he said.

But the fire has been put out and from all indication things could have gone worse than we'v seen since its happened at midnight."

No casualties

According Alhaji Bashiru, there were no casualties, adding that the fire Service has begun investigation to officially ascertain the cause of Saturday night's inferno.

"All these happened in a matter of an hour but we somehow happy that there were no human casualty"he said.

He said the cost of the the damage is yet to be valued as victims  could not count their losses at the particular moment.
