Government has announced the suspension of the proposed Fumigation Levy for shippers.

Per the policy, all imported cargo upon arrival at the port were to be subjected to fumigation with a fee.

Stakeholders in the import business, especially freight forwarders were served notices of a March 1, 2018 deadline to register online for implementation of the policy.

The fumigation of cargo was to be undertaken by a Turkish company- The Turkish company was supposed to be the service provider with the Shippers Authority as client and the Ghana Health Service as health regulator.

However, a statement from government says the move was suspended following concerns raised by importers and shippers who have kicked against levy.

In a related development, government has announced the removal of the Import VAT on 64 commodities effective Wednesday.

This was arrived at after extensive consultation with stakeholders, government said.

The 64 commodity groups included items such as mobile phones, tractors, solar cells, musical instruments, outboard motors, concrete, mortar mixes and day-old chicks..

“The suspension is pending an assessment by Harmonized code (HS Codes) for customers which were reviewed effective same date,” a press release signed by Information Minister Mustapha Abdul-Hamid released on Wednesday 21 March 2018 said.
