Kumasi Asante Kotoko goalkeeper, Felix Annan, has indicated his love for Sogakope-based club West Africa Football Academy (WAFA) is strong to the extent that he can play for the club for free.

According to Felix ‘Van’ Annan, WAFA has been behind him through thick and thin in his career and he would forever be indebted to the club.

“I can play for WAFA without taking a dime….because what they have done for me is more than money…..I have to say it because in football, sometimes you need to sacrifice and give out all your best”. He said.

“All I needed was to play and I used WAFA to set a target for myself that I want to reach ext level in my career…WAFA told me to feel free to come at anytime”. He added.

In an exclusive interview on Kumasi-based Metro FM’s Academic and Matured Sports program on Tuesday, he revealed that he started his football career as a striker where he scored 25 goals in his academy career.

“Actually played as a striker in the beginning and my finishing was super….we played a league game at coast level when I was placed in the post when our goalkeeper was not around and I performed very well… that in early 2000s before joining Feyenoord in 2003 and at the academy I remember I was playing as a striker as well as goalkeeper and I scored about 25 goals within 7 years at the academy”. He told Isaac Owusu Ansah.

Joining Asante Kotoko from Feyenoord Academy (now WAFA) in 2011, Felix Annan faced competition from veteran goalie, Isaac Amoako and the late Soulama Abdulaye, a situation he considered as great learning process in his career for three seasons but he later moved back to WAFA to revamp his career after what deemed to be unsuccessful spell at Kotoko.

Annan’s motivation has always been that he never afraid of making mistakes, he said making mistake means trying to do something, however he has no iota of fear for any striker in the premier league.

“I have never been and will never be afraid of any striker simply because of my stature because I calculate my steps very well before moving for a ball so I don’t care about who is behind the ball, I know how to defend myself”.

Felix Annan was adjudged  best goalkeeper in the just ended Ghana Premier League by a poll conducted by Metro FM’s Academic and Matured Sports.
