Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, has unveiled his decision to enter the political arena as an aspiring National Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for the Ejisu constituency.

In an interview on JoyNews’ PM Express, Nyantakyi disclosed that he had been approached by residents of Ejisu since 2012, urging him to contest for the position of Member of Parliament (MP).

However, his commitments in football administration hindered his engagement in partisan politics during that period.

"Since 2012, I have received several invitations from well-meaning people of Ejisu to contest and become their Member of Parliament. But I have on each occasion resisted the invitation on the grounds that I didn’t have the time. I was then busy with football," Nyantakyi explained.

Instead of entering politics, Nyantakyi channeled his efforts into community development initiatives, such as establishing the Annual Easter Games, which aimed to promote sports and social cohesion in the Ejisu constituency.

However, following the unfortunate passing of the constituency's Member of Parliament, John Kumah, Nyantakyi felt compelled to reconsider his stance on political involvement.

"The calls intensified again and this time, I am less busy and I want to give it a try," he conveyed.

Nyantakyi views his transition into politics as an opportunity to leverage his leadership skills and experiences from football administration to address the challenges facing Ejisu.

"This is a way of porting my capabilities and experiences in the arena of football administration to mainstream politics," he stated.

The Ejisu constituency by-election has attracted nine individuals, including prominent figures like Abena Pokuaa Boaitey, known as ‘Ejisu Bronii’, and Portia Acheampong Abronye, wife of the NPP's Bono Region Chairman.

Other contenders include Helena Mensah, Michael Owusu, Kofi Agyapong, Kwabena Boateng, and Dr. Evans Duah, a lecturer at AAMUSTED.

As Nyantakyi ventures into the realm of politics, he aims to contribute positively to the development of Ejisu, drawing from his rich experience and dedication to public service.
