Leader and founder of the United Progressive Party (UPP), Akwasi Addai popularly known as ‘Odike’, wants government to withdraw licenses of one-man churches and re-register them.

He said the churches should be operated under strict government supervision whereby they will be charged VAT and other taxes arguing that their operations are purely business.

He told government to collapse churches which do not have branches across the country.

According to the Kumasi based-businessman cum politician, churches solely owned and managed by their founders and leaders amass wealth at the expense of the vulnerable in their congregation.

He claimed majority of these one-man churches fee their congregation with false teachings.

Odike suggested that government must crack the whip on these one-man churches to ensure sanity in the church fraternity.

“In Ghana churches are springing up like mushrooms this is because a lot of people believe through church operation they can amass wealth. I believe that, most teachings from some of the one-man churches are not in consonance with the scriptures, therefore I think the time has come for government to crack the whip on them to ensure there’s sanity in the way some one-man churches operate in the country’.

“This is my advice to government, no church should be registered without initial membership of hundred (100). This, I think will totally check one-man church business in the country to promote accountability in churches,’’ he stressed.

He further suggested that churches should be formed to have a national character to control decency just like the political parties.

‘I think the churches should have a national character just like the political parties meaning they should have representative across the ten regions of the country. The doctrines of the church should also be stated in written form to ensure checks and balance in their operation before their licences are released to them’,’ he told Ultimate FM’s Isaac Bediako.

He however, called on government to ensure that one–man churches are totally eliminated from the country and ensure all churches pay VAT and Tax since their operations have partially become business and profit making.
