A group of 118 former parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has formally endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as their preferred candidate in the party’s upcoming presidential primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The declaration of support was made at a press conference led by former Sekondi Member of Parliament and ex-Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Andrew Egyapa Mercer.

Mr Egyapa Mercer explained that the endorsement followed wide-ranging consultations among the group and a sober assessment of the party’s performance in the 2024 general elections. He noted that the process allowed members to reflect on the direction the party must take to reposition itself for future electoral success.

According to him, Dr. Bawumia’s leadership style, personal integrity and vision for innovation make him the most credible candidate to steer the NPP forward.

He highlighted Dr. Bawumia’s experience in public service, economic management and digital transformation as major factors that influenced the decision, describing these qualities as critical for the party’s renewal and growth.

Mr Egyapa Mercer further indicated that the endorsement spans all regions and constituencies, underscoring what he described as a growing, broad-based consensus among party faithful at both the grassroots and leadership levels.

In addition, he called on delegates to rally strongly behind Dr. Bawumia at the primaries and cautioned party supporters against the use of hate speech.

He stressed that unity and internal cohesion would be essential to the NPP’s strength before, during and after the internal contest.
