The Local Government Service Secretariat has said it received financial clearance to engage 1,347 Environmental Health Officers and Assistants who graduated from the Accra, Ho and Tamale Schools of Hygiene from 2011 to 2015.

However, out of the number, 1,245 Environmental Health Officers and Assistants accepted the job offering and the Secretariat accordingly posted them to the 10 Regional Co-ordinating Councils (RCCs) for reposting to the Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) under their jurisdictions.

The breakdown of the postings to the RCCs were as follows:

1. Ashanti Region ¬ 142
2. Brong Ahafo Region - 138
3. Central Region - 108
4. Eastern Region - 111
5. Greater Accra Region - 149
6. Northern Region - 163
7. Upper East Region - 105
8. Upper West Region - 105
9. Volta Region - 114
10. Western Region - 110

The engagement of these officers is critical because their inadequate numbers at the various MMDAs have posed a major setback to the concerted efforts of the Government to address the sanitation menace in the country,” a statement signed by Joseph A. Ankamah, Public Affairs Officer of the Secretariat said.

“The Local Government Service firmly believes that the presence of these officers will immensely aid the Assemblies to decisively deal with the problem of sanitation.”
