A Cape Coast circuit court has acquitted and discharged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Hemang Lower Denkyira, Bright Wereko Brobbey and 18 others.
The Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD) dragged Mr Brobbey and 18 others to court for allegedly stealing fertilizers belonging to the board.
Mr Wereko Brobbey who is a community development specialist is believed to have gotten the fertilizers from the second accused Felix Kwame Quainoo, a district cocoa officer.
Mr Brobbey is alleged to have distributed the fertilizers to delegates in his constituency during the NPP's parliamentary primaries.
According to the complainant, the fertilizers were meant for distribution to cocoa farmers but were given freely to NPP polling station executives to entice them to vote for the parliamentary candidate.
The quantity of fertilizer bags involved is 1200 valued at GH¢210, 287.
Acquitting the suspects, the Court said when the case was called two weeks ago, the Attorney General (AG) said there was fresh evidence to be used against the partliamentary candidate whose prosecution was believed to be political.
However, when the case was called Wednesday, the AG came and entered nolle prosequi, that is, declaring an intention to discontinue with the case.
Based on this information, the judge acquitted and discharged Mr Brobbey and the 18 others.
An excited Mr Brobbey, bathed in powder, told Joy News' Central Regional correspondent, Richard Kwadwo Nyarko that he is happy the case hanging around his neck for close to a year now is finally over and he can now live his life in peace.
Mr Brobbey said this will save him the finger pointing and name calling in the community. He is optimistic of winning the upcoming election in the constituency.
