1. Searching For Something On A Particular Website


If you’re searching for something and you want results from a particular website, then it will be wise to use some google search operators such as the colon. For instance, if you want to find something exclusive on OMGVoice.com, you can enter it this way, “10 Dangerous Moments You Wish Never Occur In Front Of Your Ghanaian Dad:OMGVoice.com” this will leave out all other sites and results that are not related to your search.

2. Exact Phrase


If you want to search for an exact phrase or sentence, put your search in double parenthesis (“…”). Example, if you want to search for the results of the 2008 elections, you should put it this way, “2008 Election Results”. This will exclude any other result and present only results that suit your exact search criteria.

3. Search Related Websites


Let’s say you want to find websites similar to OMGVoice, the easiest way to this is to precede the website you want with “RELATED” (without the quotes). Example, Related:OMGVoice.com. This will return all websites similar to OMGVoice. Of course, we know there is none.

4. Searching For A Particular File


If you need to find a particular file on Google, say an annual report of a particular bank and you need it in PDF or Word Document, you should type, [Bank Name] Annual Report filetype:PDF and Google will only bring to you files in only PDF. If you need it in word format, you do same and change the file type to DOC.

5. Search With Missing Keyword


Let’s say you want to search for the lyrics of your favourite song but do not remember the rest of the words or say you want to search for an idiom but don’t remember the rest of the words, you can still search for it with this trick. Add asterisks to the words you remember and Google will get you the rest. E.g. if you want to find the complete idiom to “pinch of salt”, you can type, *pinch of salt and Google will get you the complete idiom. Same way you can do for lyrics of your favorite song.

6. Searching Within A Range


We all have budgets when buying something and always wish to know the prices within our budget but if you don’t know most of the tricks on Google, you will search things on a broader scope which will not give you the result you desire. Let’s assume, you’re searching for mobile phones within the price range of $100 to $300, you can do this by typing, mobile phones $100..$300, and Google will return results within the range you specified.

7. Blocking Explicit Media On Google


In case you have a child who uses Google, your greatest headache will be his/her exposure to pornographic materials. Many users may not know this but you can block nudity and bad media on Google. To do this, go to settings on Google and you will see, SafeSearch Filters, you can turn it on or off and this will block all porn sites and make it safe for child usage. You can also lock the SafeSearch to prevent users from turning it on or off.

8. Location Based Search


If you’ve noticed, sometimes while searching for something in Accra or Kumasi, Google returns results from Australia, India and other countries ? You can eliminate this by limiting your search to your location. If you need some information on Night Clubs in Kumasi, it is important to turn on your location to make searching simple for you.

9. Make Calls With “Google Now”


If you love using “Google Now” then this trick will come in handy. If you want to call someone, just type Call and the contact name of the person and google will do the calling for you. Example; Call Mahama. This works only on phones.

10. Set Reminders On Google


To set a reminder, just tell Google what you want to be reminded of and that’s it, it will remind you when the time and date is up, it’s simple as that. To do this, type, “Set reminder” and google will present you an interface where you can enter what you want to be reminder of, the date and time.

11. You Can Search Misplaced Or lost Phones On Google


Just get to Google on a computer and ask Google, Where is my phone. If you’re logged into the same account as what you’re using on your phone, Google will locate your phone for you. You can ring it, lock it or erase everything on it completely if it’s stolen.

12. Searching Within A Time Frame


You want to search for something specific to a particular time but you get results as old as 10 years back. This is how to go about it. Below your search bar, you’ll see Tools, click on it and you will have two drop down menus, “All Time” and “All Results”. Click on “All Time” where you can choose from the different time frames. You can also click on Custom to set a particular date.

Just Google Earthquake and Google will give you a card showing all the recent activities of earthquakes and you can use this to determine whether there was one close to you or whether what you heard in the news was a major earthquake or just a tremor.
