Professor Samuel Adu Gyamfi, Head of the History and Political Science Department at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has cautioned the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and its flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, against basing their campaign on the policies and legacies of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.

Speaking in an interview on Neat FM on July 15, 2024, Prof. Gyamfi argued that President Akufo-Addo has not established significant legacies or policies during his tenure, which spans almost eight years.

He warned that attempting to campaign on these grounds could be detrimental to the party's electoral prospects.

“If the NPP tries to campaign on the so-called achievements of Akufo-Addo, they won’t even secure 40% of the vote in the upcoming 2024 elections,” he stated.

The professor emphasized the need for the NPP to pivot its campaign strategy to focus on Dr. Bawumia’s potential contributions.

“The party should present the credible ideas and strengths that Bawumia brings to the table,” he advised.

Prof. Gyamfi further expressed concerns that reliance on Akufo-Addo’s credentials could undermine Bawumia’s campaign, urging the party to steer clear of this approach to avoid denting their chances in the December polls.

“So, they should go into this election with the prowess that Bawumia is bringing on board because Akufo-Addo’s credentials cannot push the NPP. They shouldn’t even try before he destroys Bawumia’s campaign. I am being frank with you.

“Bawumia brings all the credible ideas that would have made Ghana,” he added.
