2026 FIFAWCQ: Cape Verde make history as the smallest African country to qualify for the Mundial
14th October 2025
Cape Verde has achieved a monumental milestone in its footballing history, securing its first-ever FIFA World Cup qualification after a commanding 3–0 victory over Eswatini at the National Stadium in Praia.
With a population of fewer than 600,000, the Tubarões Azuis (Blue Sharks) defied expectations in Group D, finishing ahead of continental heavyweights Cameroon.
Led by manager Bubista, Cape Verde remained unbeaten at home, winning four of five matches without conceding a single goal. A pivotal 1–0 win over Cameroon helped offset a 4–1 loss in Yaoundé, proving decisive in the final standings.
On Monday, goals from Dailon Livramento, Willy Semedo, and Stopira — all scored shortly after halftime — sealed the result and rendered Cameroon’s match against Angola irrelevant.
Cape Verde’s qualification campaign leaned on experience and leadership, with four of the nation’s five most-capped players — Ryan Mendes, Vozinha, Stopira, and Garry Rodrigues — playing key roles.
- Ryan Mendes: Nation’s all-time leading scorer (22 goals)
- Vozinha: Commanded the goal with composure
- Stopira: Scored and anchored the backline
- Rodrigues: Provided width and drive
- Formerly part of Portugal until 1974
- Joined FIFA in 1982
- First AFCON appearance: 2013
- First World Cup qualification: 2026
Cape Verde’s journey is a testament to resilience, strategic growth, and national pride, marking a new chapter for one of Africa’s rising football nations.
