Sky watchers, chuffed by atstronomy fans on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean  were drawn outside to take a look at the moon before it passes the sun to make a so-called " ring of fire" on Thursday.

Gathered were about a 3,000 on the southwestern part of the French-governed island to watch the " annular solar eclipse".

Wearing the supposed protective glasses, tourists and residents looked on as pictures of the astronomical phenomenon were taken for several hours moment when the moon blotted out most of the sun to make appear a bright ring around its edges.

"I (once) saw a solar eclipse...but I have never seen an annular solar eclipse before," Austrian tourist Beate Sosz said. "It is great." he said to Reuters Television.
