The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has assured the Electoral Commission (EC) and residents of Akwatia of the Ghana Police Service’s full readiness ahead of the constituency’s by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

Speaking during a visit to the Akwatia Collation Centre on Monday, September 1, the IGP emphasised the police’s commitment to ensuring a peaceful and secure electoral process.

“We are all with you, and it will be fine. We’re strong on the ground, we’re fully prepared. And we will give you the support,” Dr. Yohuno stated during his interaction with the EC’s National Director of Training, Dr. Serebour Quaicoe, and Eastern Regional EC Director, John Appiah Baffoe.

The by-election was necessitated by the recent passing of the Member of Parliament for Akwatia, Ernest Kumi.

Meanwhile, the race is shaping up to be closely contested. Two recent independent polls suggest the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Bernard Baidoo Bediako, holds a narrow lead over his New Patriotic Party (NPP) opponent, Solomon Asumadu.

A survey by Sanity Africa, conducted between August 1 and 27, places Bediako at 52.3%, with Asumadu trailing at 47.7% — a slim 4.6-point margin. Similarly, data from Global Info Analytics shows Bediako with 53% support compared to Asumadu’s 47%, reinforcing the NDC candidate’s slight edge as voters head to the polls.
