Try anything and a by-election will be held in your constituency- Azorka warns Afenyo-Markin
Tempers flared in the Akwatia Constituency on Tuesday after the National Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Chief Sofo Azorka, confronted Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin over an unannounced visit to the NDC’s party office.
The unexpected appearance by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary leader and his entourage reportedly caught NDC executives off guard, triggering a heated altercation between members of both parties.
Describing the visit as disrespectful, Azorka accused the NPP of attempting to intimidate NDC supporters ahead of the by-election.
“I was told Afenyi-Markin came here. If I came to meet him here, we would have held a by- election in his constituency. He is very lucky. This is a party office. They do not have any right to come here. This place is not parliament,” he said.
According to NDC members, Afenyo-Markin’s team allegedly attempted to remove campaign posters belonging to their candidate, a move they say escalated the confrontation.
Azorka further alleged that the NPP was using the by-election as a testing ground for “undemocratic strategies,” and issued a warning.
“If he will not respect the police, a by-election will be held in his [Afenyo-Markin’s] constituency if he tries anything.”
Police have confirmed the arrest of one individual in connection with the incident, though the details of the arrest remain unclear.
The by-election which was triggered by the death of the sitting MP, Ernest Kumi is currently underway across 119 polling stations in the constituency. More than 50,000 registered voters are expected to cast their ballots, with results anticipated later today.
