Uganda stun Ghana on penalties to seal dramatic FIFA U-17 World Cup play-off victory

Uganda’s U-17 side kept their composure in a dramatic penalty shootout to beat Ghana 8-7 after a thrilling 2-2 draw in their FIFA U-17 World Cup play-off on Saturday evening.
The West Africans made a bright start and took the lead in the ninth minute through Eric Gyamfi, whose early strike gave Ghana control of the contest.
Uganda responded strongly and found an equaliser in the 34th minute when Owen Mukisa finished calmly to bring the East Africans back into the game before half-time.
Ghana regained the advantage shortly after the restart. Latif Abdul Wunzalgu struck in the 51st minute to restore his side’s lead and put them within touching distance of victory.
But Uganda refused to give in and continued to press forward in search of another breakthrough. Their determination paid off deep into stoppage time when Arafat Ibanda converted from the penalty spot in the 91st minute to make it 2-2 and force extra time.
Neither side could find a winner during the additional period, sending the tie to a tense shootout.
Uganda held their nerve from the spot, with John Brian Owino, Henry Muhoozi, Abdulshakur Babi, Brian Olwa, Arafat Ibanda, Mujab Mbalire, Musa Suuna and Travor Mubiru all converting their penalties.
Ghana’s hopes faded when Jacob Kpoeti missed his effort, handing Uganda a memorable victory in a closely fought encounter.
The result capped a dramatic evening of football, with Uganda showing resilience and composure when it mattered most to secure their place in style.
