C. K. Akonnor Leads wins Kenyan Premier League with Gor Mahia

Kenyan giants Gor Mahia have been crowned champions of the Kenyan Premier League for a record 22nd time under the guidance of Ghanaian coach Charles Akonnor, sealing the title with two matches still to play.
The triumph was confirmed on Sunday after fierce rivals AFC Leopards suffered a 2-1 defeat to APS Bomet, leaving Gor Mahia comfortably at the top of the table.
Known affectionately as K’Ogalo, Gor Mahia now sit on 68 points and remain four clear of AFC Leopards, who have played one game more and have only a single fixture remaining this season.
The title-winning campaign marks a remarkable achievement for Akonnor, who took charge of the Nairobi-based club in August 2025. The former Ghana coach arrived with an all-Ghanaian technical team, including assistant coach Bismark Kobi Mensah, goalkeepers’ trainer Ben Owu and video analyst Joshua Kofi Boafo.
Despite having their week 33 fixture against Mara Sugar in Homa Bay postponed due to a court-related issue, Gor Mahia’s consistency throughout the season proved enough to secure the championship ahead of schedule.
The club’s success was also powered by a strong Ghanaian influence on the pitch. Players Enock Morrison, George Amonoo, Ebenezer Adukwaw and Ebenezer Assifuah played key roles during the campaign, contributing significantly to the club’s dominant run.
For Akonnor, the title represents another milestone in his coaching career and further strengthens the growing impact of Ghanaian football expertise across the African continent.
