Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council has launched Operation Clean and Green campaign in the region.

The aim is to achieve sustainable results that will put the region back to its glory as the cleanest and greenest region.

It will be recalled that the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly(KMA) launched a new strategy to drive environmental cleanliness and restore Kumasi to its pride as the Garden City of West Africa.

The exercise is dubbed ‘Operation Keep the City Green and Clean’ and the education of the public against indiscriminate disposal of waste.

The Ashanti Regional Hon Simon Osei Mensah speaking at the launch of the campaign held in Kumasi said it has always been vision and dream REGSEC to launch a campaign which seeks, among others, to ensure that the MMDAs develop infrastructure and programmes that support the move towards a clean and leading green region in the country.

According to the Minister, the Operation Clean and Green campaign is a great opportunity to determine how the precious assets of our region, that is our land, our natural resources and environment is properly stewarded for human development.

To ensure the successful implementation of this campaign, the REGSEC have constituted a Regional Committee to supervise the implementation of the Campaign in all the 43 MMDAs in the region. In a bid to sustain this regional Clean and Green campaign, a number of measures have been put in place to keep the campaign in motion.

“As a prelude to this launch, all the 43 MMDAs were directed to constitute Sanitation committees to oversee the Clean and Green Campaign in their jurisdictions. I am reliably informed that list of members have been submitted to the regional Co-ordinating Council but I must stress that the work goes beyond setting up the committees but making it operational. The Regional Committee has proposed the institution of some Award Schemes to be awarded at the regional Celebration of the Independence Day to sustain the campaign at the District level. I wish to place on record that the Campaign shall ensure quarterly activities in our communities such as organizing communal labour with the participation and supervision of the members of the Sanitation committees in the various MMDA’s. MMDAs are also to ensure strict enforcement of all bye laws on sanitation” the Minister said.

He added that the Ashanti Regional Co-ordinating Council (REGSEC) is providing the seed money often thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢10,000.00). It is our expectation that this amount will ginger the involvement of all stakeholders in the region to ensure a smooth implementation of the Clean and Green Campaign.

The Minister concluded there is no doubt that an exercise of such scope requires collective effort of all stakeholders to ensure overall success in restoring the Region to its past glory as the garden city of West Africa.
