A$AP Rocky's assault trial in Sweden began on Tuesday July 30, and he pleaded not guilty to the charges of assaulting a 19-year-old Afghan refugee in the country's capital a month ago.

The US rapper has been held in prison custody since July 3 over the street brawl which occurred on June 30.

He was arraigned alongside two members of his entourage after a delayed trial due to the massive media and fan interest in the case.

Swedish public prosecutor Daniel Suneson while reading out the charges accused A$AP Rocky of beating the victim with a whole or part of a glass bottle while he laid on the ground.

In addition, the Afgan refugee Mustafa Jafari said he suffered injuries to his arm and head in the fight as well as broken ribs. "I felt that they would beat me to death," he said.

Jafari also claimed he has been having nightmares since the incident and have been unable to work due to the injuries on his hand.

He debunked claims of being high on drugs while stating that the video of the attack that circulated damaged his reputation.

However A$AP Rocky's lawyer, Slobodan Jovicic insisted that his client did not commit any crime and also alleged that he acted out of fear as the men that approached him were "deeply provoking".

A$AP Rocky's crew Bladimir Corniel and David Rispers also denied any wrongdoing. Jovicic further told the judges that the rapper was not the one who kicked or punched the alleged victim when he was on the ground.

He added that Rocky laid hands on the guy because he felt his bodyguard was in danger.

Asides footage of the altercation posted by TMZ and clips shared by A$AP Rocky (the prosecutor said it was edited) being played in court, text messages exchanged between different members of A$AP Rocky's team who spoke about "cleaning up" and "deleting" the videos were also read.

Mustafa Jafari is seeking 139,700 Swedish krona in damages (about $14,600) and if convicted, the US rapper could face up to two years in prison.

The trial is scheduled for Tuesday, Thursday and Friday - although it could be concluded before then.

A$AP Rocky's imprisonment has attracted the attention of US President Donald Trump who revealed that he spoke to the Swedish Prime Minister after requests to intervene from Kanye West and his wife Kim Kardashian West.

However Swedish law doesn't have a bail system and the Swedish authorities refused to release the musician which led to his trial.
