Daniel Bugri Naabu, former Northern regional chairman of the ruling New Patriotic Party, says President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo deserves the world peace prize for ensuring the restoration of peace to Dagbon after so many years of conflict.

President Akufo-Addo in the lead up to the 2016 elections promised that he would make sure Dagbon regained its past glory by brokering peace between the two feuding gates, Andanis and Abudus.

On November 2018, the committee of eminent chiefs led by the Asantehene and the two feuding gates presented a peace road map to the President at the Jubilee House with both the Abudu and Andanis promising to abide by it.

The roadmap saw the performance of the funeral rites of the late two overlords of Dagbon, Ya Naa Mahamdu Abdulia IV and Ya Naa Yakubu Andani II and the subsequent enskinment of a new Ya Naa for the Dagbon Kingdom.

Political will

According to Bugri Naabu, the political will and posture of President Akufo-Addo towards the reconciliation and peaceful resolution of the Dagbon chieftaincy feud is unprecedented and surpasses any by his predecessors.

Mr. Naabu in an interview with the Daily Statesman said the efforts of the President crowned all that was started by his predecessors.

“Nana Addo deserves world peace prize because he has brought peace to Dagbon and the Northern Region. Now we will not be talking about Abudu and Andani but Dagbon and Northern Region. Nana Addo has done a wonderful job and the people of the north are eternally indebted to him,” he said.

Many had held that it was unfair for President Akufo-Addo to take all the glory for the peace in Dagbon because others played a major role in the process.

But the leading NPP member said the Dagbon peace process would have been halted as it happened during the NDC regime had President Akufo-Addo not been elected people of Ghana.

“His Royal Majesty, the Asantehene, His Royal Majesty, the Yagbonwura and His Royal Majesty, the Nayiri, all deserve praise for their immense contribution in the mediation process. President Kufuor deserves praise for his magnanimous insight for establishing the mediation committee but Nana Addo deserves more than a noble peace prize,” he said.

“It takes a man of great character, peace and wisdom to bring peace to his community and Nana Addo has shown Ghana and the World that he is a peace maker,” he said.
