A close associate to Akufo-Addo, Gabby Otchere-Darko, has stated that the President is aiming to occupy the seat of government for two terms.

He said President Akufo-Addo will definitely seek re-election in the 2020 polls because there are a lot good things he still has to offer to the nation.

Mr. Otchere-Darko made these comments during the just-ended Annual Delegates Congress of the ruling New Patriotic Party, held in Koforidua in the Eastern region.

According to him, the President has so much passion for the job that four years will not be enough for him to institute all his plans for a better Ghana.

He said there is no problem at all with the President’s physical condition, insisting his only worry is that Akufo-Addo “works too hard”.

“My fear is that he works too hard. In terms of his physical endurance, he has more than even me, and I am 20 years younger than him…and he is alert,” Mr. Otchere Darko said in an interview with Joy News over the weekend.

“What feeds the physical is also the conviction. He feels that he has to achieve something and I feel he paces himself in a way that can keep him going in a sense that it is the work that keeps him going. It is not about the perks of the office.”

His comments come after the President suggested in one of the addresses last year that he may not seek re-election.

Speaking to some journalists at the Jubilee House, President Akufo-Addo said he may not be on the ballot come 2020.

The president made these comments in relation to threats by a group of illegal miners that they will vote him out in the next election for his campaign against their activities.

However, Mr. Otchere-Darko insists the President is “ready” and fit to run for another four years when his current mandate ends.
