The La Liga Awards is presented annually by the Liga de Fútbol Profesional (LFP) to the best players and coach in La Liga and the first division of association football in Spain. Established in the 2008-09 season, they are the first official awards in the history of the Spanish competition.
La Liga's best coach and player in each position goalkeeper, defender, midfielder, and forward are chosen based on a voting by the captain and vice-captains of each club, while the best player overall is determined via statistical analysis.
Although FCBarcelona won the league, it was Atletico, who finished third in the league, who scooped majority of the awards.
Atletico Madrid hitman, Antoine Griezmann was the biggest winner on Monday night as he was adjudged the best player in La Liga last season at the LFP’s awards gala. The French striker played 38 games, created 58 chances, scored 22 goals, had a chance conversion rate of 29.3% and assisted 5 goals.
Fellow Atletico teammate Jan Oblak was named the best goalkeeper last season after keeping a remarkable 24 clean sheets (that is 8 more than any other goalkeeper) last season.
Diego Godin was also named the best defender in La Liga. Barcelona duo Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez also won awards, Messi was named the best striker in the league and Suarez who was the “pichipichi’( golden boot winner with 40 goals) was named the best ‘World Player’ in La Liga for the 2015/2016
Real Madrid’s only winner was midfielder Luka Modric. Diego Simeone who finished third was named best coach ahead of Eduardo Berizzo (Celta Vigo) and Marcelinho Garcia Toral (formerly of Villarreal). Luis Enrique, the league winning coach wasn’t even nominated.
Marco Asensio was named Best Newcomer, although that was for his performances at Espanyol, where he spent last season on loan from Madrid.
