Music producer and sound engineer, Appiah Dankwah aka Appietus, has described the recent establishment of the MUSIGA Academy as a demonstration of the progressive nature of the current leadership of the Musicians Union of Ghana (MUSIGA).

The long -awaited MUSIGA Academy project, in collaboration with the National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI), was eventually launched last Saturday, November 19 in Accra.

According to Ahuma Bosco Ocansey, Head of Communications and Special Projects for the union, the Academy will provide competence-based training for professionals in the music industry. The MUSIGA official said the academy would offer training in 10 modules including Using ICT for Career Development; Copyright and Publishing; Survey of Music in Ghana; Music Theory and Musicianship.

There will be options for specialization in areas such as Music Business Management, Traditional Instruments Specialization, Western Instruments Specialization, Centre Stage Grooming and Singing and Songwriting as well as Arrangement and Composition.

“I am still shocked that the Academy has finally become a reality.I used to feel not enough was being done by MUSIGA for up- and- coming talents.

That had been my biggest challenge with the union and it was the reason I decided to contest against the current president Obour in the last elections.” According to Appietus who is currently MUSIGA’s Talent Discovery and Development Director, the MUSIGA Academy located at NAFTI would secure the future of the next generation of musicians.

“The future of music in the country is in safe hands because the next crop of artistes will be taught many courses such as music theory, composition, performance, recording and engineering and marketing aimed at improving their skills,” he said.

At the Academy launch, Bice Osei Kuffour, the MUSIGA president said developments in the music industry required that players in the music upgraded their skills consistently to keep abreast with new trends.
