Apple has announced that it will allow developers to offer discounts and free subscriptions to users through offer codes. This move will help developers to attract new paying users and also help users to get deals. These discount codes can be either offered online or can be handed out physically as well like a scratch card.
“Later this year, you’ll (developers) be able to acquire, retain, and win back subscribers with subscription offer codes: unique, alphanumeric codes that provide free or discounted prices for auto-renewable subscriptions,” Apple announced in an official post.

These codes will only be valid for iPhone and iPads running iOS 14. These codes can be redeemed on the App Store, “through a one-time code redemption URL, or within your app if you’ve implemented the presentCodeRedemptionSheet API.”

Developers can expect to acquire new users through this new code redemption system and also retain users too. Another interesting aspect is that developers can run promotionals and also create seasonal demand.

“There are three types of subscription offers you (developers) can give to customers: introductory, promotional, and offer codes (coming soon). You can provide all three offer types at once, depending on your business goals,” explained Apple.

Developers will also have the option to hand pick the type of users they want to give away these offer codes. However, there is a limit to creating these offer codes. “10 active offers per subscription. You can create a maximum of 150,000 codes per app per quarter,” said the company.
