General Secretary of the governing National Democratic Congress has dispelled rumors president John Mahama wants Kaleo-Nadowli MP Alban Bagbin defeated in the upcoming elections.

Johnson Asiedu Nketia said such rumors can only be peddled by traitors in the NDC who are doing the bidding of the opposition New Patriotic Party.

The General Secretary popularly called General Mosquito, made the comment during a campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Wednesday.

Alban Bagbin had a frosty relationship in the early years of John Mahama's tenure accusing the president of running a family and friends government.

The relationship appears to have been repaired after Bagbin was appointed into government by the president.

With barely three months to go for the December elections, there are reports, the president is scheming to have Bagbin defeated, schemes Asiedu Nketia insisted were not true.

He said it is the NPP members who are using "traitors" in the NDC to cause disaffection for John Mahama.

"It is not everybody who want Bagbin in Parliament and those who dread his name want to find ways of removing him from Parliament. But if they come frontally they know they will be defeated. So they are coming through us, the NDC people.

"The NPP, the name they fear in Parliament is Bagbin. They go behind and use some of the NDC people so that they will appear to be attacking from within and then NPP will say it is his own people who are fighting him we don't have anything to do with it.

"It is a lie. It is NPP that is using playable NDC hands to execute that agenda and Nelson Mandela says a traitor is worse than the enemy himself," he said.

He said President Mahama is not "sponsoring any candidate in Nadowli Kaleo and no genuine NDC person is sponsoring any other candidate in Nadowli Kaleo. So our one and only candidate is Alban Babgin," he maintained.

But the NPP has parried the accusation, describing it as a huge joke from a General Secretary with the reputation of turning Ghana's political discourse into "pure comedy."

Nana Akomea told Joy News' Evans Mensah the NDC General Secretary cannot be taken seriously.

He said during the heat of the election petition in 2013 when hoodlums of the NDC gathered at the Supreme Court to attack NPP supporters the same Asiedu Nketia was on air saying it was NPP members who were wearing NDC T Shirts to cause mayhem.

"This is pure comedy," he stated, asking, "is it NPP who asked Bagbin to say Mahama was executing family and friends government; is it the NPP who asked Bagbin to say Mahama cannot be trusted to fight corrupt?"

He said the NPP has no interest in creating enmity between Bagbin and Mahama. If anything, and if they have money, they would rather use it in efforts to remove Mahama in office and not waste it on Alban Bagbin.

He suspects that the strategy Asiedu Nketia is attributing to the NPP may perhaps be the strategy he has been using to cause disaffection and chaos in other parties.
