Villa owner Tony Xia is known to be privately weighing up his options and the loss at Deepdale has done Di Matteo no favours. According to reports, Xia has already started looking at candidates to replace him, with former England manager Steve McClaren in the frame.

The Italian is under mounting pressure from the Villa Park board following what has been a very difficult start to the season. After the 2-0 defeat away to Preston, Di Matteo reassured: 'There's a team here that is good, it will come good for us.'

Aston Villa currently lies in 19th place in Championship log with 10 points after 11 games, recording only one win, drawing 7 and losing 3 games.

One thing is for certain, Di Matteo is running out of life lines and something needs to change fast if he is to turn around the sinking ship that is Aston Villa where Ghanaian internationals Jordan Ayew and Albert Adomah ply their trade. The next round of games against Wolverhampton at home and to Reading away is a must win if he is to change the minds of the board and continue at the helm at Villa Park.
