Bawumia's proposal to empower traditional rulers laudable - Prez Kufuor

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has commended Vice President and Flagbearer of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for his decision to empower traditional rulers as President of Ghana.

Dr. Bawumia has said if elected President, he will amend the Chieftaincy Act to grant Chiefs more powers to participate in the governance system at local level, and also be engaged more by the government.

The proposal has been well received by many across the country, and former President Kufuor has added his voice and support to it.

Addressing Ghanaians on a wide-range of issues, President Kufuor embraced the proposal, adding that the Chieftaincy institution commands enormous respect and getting them involved will be to the benefit of the nation.

"I is laudable and a good proposal," President Kufuor said about Bawumia's proposal.

"I don't know if you have oserved that now, from the coast to north east to west, our chiefs and queenmothers are well educated knowledgeable."

"I am apolitician and I am not afraid to say that currently, Ghanaians are suspicious of politicians. They assume politicians are corrupt. But they have enormous respect for our traditional leaders. Our Chiefs command so mucj respect .

"In Accra the Chiefs command respect, and so is the situation through the Akan areas; whether Akropong, Asante, Akyem, Akwamu, Kwahu, look at how people respect the Chiefs. Go to Bono, to Gonja, Dagomba, Wa, Western , etc the people respect the traditional rulers."

President Kufuor added by the proposal, Bawumia has shown that he understands the nation's value system and believes he can get a lot of things done through the Chiefs.

"So of Bawumia is saying that he will empower the Chiefs and involve them in governance, it is laudable."

"After all as a politician, you are a servant leader. You're here to serve so it is important to understand and appreciate the value system of the country you want to serve and that is it."

"If through the Chiefs you'll get the people to understand what you want to do for them for the country to move forward, that is something very good."
