Black Maidens triumph over Benin in WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup opener
13th December 2024
Ghana's Black Maidens delivered a commanding performance to secure a 4-1 victory over Benin in their opening match of the WAFU B U-17 Girls Cup on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
Playing at the Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence (GSCE) in Prampram, the Black Maidens started strong, with Priscilla Mensah scoring in the 6th minute.
Christiana Ashiaku then stole the show with a remarkable hat-trick. She doubled Ghana’s lead in the 17th minute, converted a penalty in the 44th, and sealed her treble with a brilliant finish just before full-time.
Benin managed to pull one back through Yenido Gandonou in the second half and showed improved performance but could not capitalize on their chances.
The win places Ghana in a favorable position in Group A. Due to Burkina Faso’s withdrawal, Ghana will face Benin again in their second group match on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
With this dominant start, the Black Maidens, led by standout performer Ashiaku, are poised to continue their pursuit of tournament glory on home soil.
