COPEC boss rates government 65–70% on Energy Sector performance
1st March 2026
The Executive Secretary of the Chamber of Petroleum Consumers (COPEC), Duncan Amoah, has commended improvements in Ghana’s energy sector, rating the government between 65 and 70 percent for its performance as outlined in the 2026 State of the Nation Address.
Speaking on The Big Issue on Channel One TV on Saturday, February 28, Mr Amoah highlighted reforms at the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as a notable achievement.
He explained that ECG, which previously operated approximately 73 separate bank accounts, has streamlined its financial operations to one or two accounts, enhancing transparency and improving revenue management.
According to him, this restructuring has strengthened the cash waterfall mechanism, enabling the company to use internally generated funds to settle obligations to Independent Power Producers (IPPs).
While acknowledging the gains in financial discipline, Mr Amoah expressed concern over the high cost of electricity, describing it as a significant burden on consumers.
He cautioned that if households are spending as much as or more than they previously did on electricity, it signals underlying structural problems that must be urgently addressed. He urged the sector minister, John Jinapor, to prioritise measures aimed at reducing power costs.
Mr Amoah maintained that although progress has been made, deeper systemic and structural reforms are necessary to guarantee affordable and reliable electricity supply for Ghanaians.
