General Secretary of the All People’s Congress (APC) Razak Kojo Opoku, has said that the party is not seeking to win the 2016 Presidential elections but rather eagerly preparing their grassroots to win more Parliamentary seats to contest for the 2020 Presidential elections.

According to him, though APC flagbearer has been disqualified from contesting the December polls, they are in no way suspending their campaigns because their main aim is to win more Parliamentary seats for the 2020 elections.

He revealed that right after the declaration of the winner of the December 7 election, the APC will reshuffle their team in 2017 from the polling station, through constituency to the regional level.

“In 2018, we will go for national delegates congress to get a presidential candidate against the 2020 elections. Our program lineup has nothing to do with the present election because our focus is on 2020” he stated.

Flagbearer of the party, Hassan Ayariga and 11 other presidential nominees were recently disqualified from the 2016 presidential poll for various infractions including alleged forgery and perjury.

An angry Ayariga then went ballistic on the Chair of the Electoral Commission, Mrs Charlotte Osei, describing her as "stupid" and "foolish", minutes after the announcement of his fate.

But Razak Opoku in an interview on Accra based Onua fm said APC was not established for 2016 presidential elections.

“22nd of this month makes us only 6 months old. Besides 2020 Presidential election is just right at the corner, more presidential elections are yet to come. This disqualification challenge of the EC does not tickle us. APC has come to stay,” he said.

He maintained that there will not be any alliance with any of the four parties that passed muster.

“I don’t think we are going to synergize with any political party. It’s never an option. The National executives committee of APC will have to discuss that… at the appropriate time I will come out to communicate to the public”.

The General Secretary emphasized that their presidential candidate, Dr. Hassan Ayariga has issues with the EC but that does not mean they are abandoning the race.

“The fact that our flag bearer has issues with the EC does not mean we have to sleep on our activities and wait on the court’s fate or decision to campaign. We have to pursue our campaign activities to the core. What if the court gives us the chance to join the race? Does it mean we are going to start from zero?” he quizzed.

He continued: "We have not wasted resources if EC should win against us in the court of law. Our flag bearer, Dr. Hassan Ayariga is young of age, vibrant and also an energetic leader, however even if we have wasted resources, we’re much focused to win the next Presidential elections come 2020 or later.”
