The Savannah Regional Communications Director of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Malik Basintale, has backed the demands of the #FixTheCountry campaigners.

According to him, the demands of the group are “legitimate and justified”.

A group of Ghanaians who are unhappy with the economic challenges in the country have taken to social media to express their grievances.

Using the hashtag #FixTheCountry on social media, members of the movement expressed displeasure over successive governments’ failure to improve the living standards of Ghanaians.

The campaigners have largely decried the country’s inadequate or non-existent amenities, deplorable infrastructure, poor sanitary conditions, a housing deficit accompanied by exorbitant rent, general high cost of living, and high levels of unemployment with its attendant problems.

They planned a demonstration on May 9, 2021, but their request for police protection was turned down.

Mr. Basintale speaking on Citi TV’s Breakfast Daily programme on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, backed the groups action.

According to him, the failed promises of the Akufo-Addo Bawumia government are the cause for the said agitations.

‘I don’t know which of the promises by this Akufo-Bawumia government has been achieved apart from their unidentifiable and lost non-existing achievements. We all remember most of the things and comments that the current president and the vice president made when they were in opposition, and now if any media house plays them now, they are classified as anti-government and all.”

“I think if that was to be used in judging them now that they are in power, automatically one could say that President Akufo-Addo should have resigned by now. So I support the campaigners of the #FixTheCountry, and they have every right to demand whatever they are demanding now because I think they are just asking the government to deliver what they promised Ghanaians in the build-up to the elections. So I fully support them in their demands and they have a right.”

About the group

The “#FixTheCountry” campaign has been trending online since it started on Twitter over a week ago.

It has since become more organized after its members attempted to hold a demonstration on May 9.

The planned demonstration was however stifled by the state after the Ghana Police Service secured an injunction against it.

The court ruled that the planned protest would not be able to come off until the restriction on public gatherings is lifted.

Conveners of the protest have now moved to challenge the injunction.

While at it, they held an online protest on Sunday, May 9, 2021.
