The governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) has warned party members dissatisfied with the President’s nominees for the role of Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs) not to cause mayhem.

National Youth Organizer of the NPP, Henry Nana Boakye (Nana B) cautioned that the party is reliably informed that some persons are planning to foment trouble, adding that such individuals must reconsider their intended action.

Last Sunday, government released the list of MMDCE nominees. But since then, parts of the country have recorded pockets of violent protests over the list.

There were also been threats from some NPP members, who said they would boycott party activities due to the failure of the president to nominate their preferred candidates.

But speaking on Eyewitness News, Henry Boakye pleaded with the agitated members to be measured in expressing disappointment and not engage in acts that could destabilize peace in the country.

“All 2,000 aspirants cannot be MMDCEs so certainly 260 names ought to be presented for approval. So they have to be measured in their disappointment. They need to blend the highs and the lows. People should also know that the fact that they are disappointed does not mean they should go about vandalizing properties. So if anyone is caught and prosecuted, it is just a matter of law. So I am calling on the teeming youth to be calm”.

“We also have intel that some miscreants want to use us as a platform to cause trouble. So we are calling on the security agencies to be on the alert”, he further advised.

The nomination of MMDCEs across the country has been greeted with mixed reactions, with many agitating and accusing the President of nominating the wrong people to represent him at the local level.

Some are also saying they do not associate with nominated persons and for that matter calling for different persons to be nominated.

In the Tema Central constituency, some aggrieved supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) earlier locked up the party’s office in protest of President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Yohane Armah Ashitey as the MCE for Tema.

Some NPP youth at Chereponi in the North East Region also destroyed some structures after the nomination of Zuwera Mada Nashiru as the District Chief Executive was announced over the weekend.
