Dutch police said on Wednesday they shot and killed a man on a path behind the country’s central bank in Amsterdam after he brandished a firearm at them.

The man was killed during an exchange of fire near the Nederlandsche Bank on Wednesday night.

He died of his injuries while a bystander was also wounded, police said in a statement.

Amsterdam police said the suspect was shot after approaching officers with a gun.

The police said they had been responding to reports of the man with a gun on an adjoining street when he “came at the agents with the weapon.”

Pictures posted on social media showed paramedics and police at the scene and a man lying motionless on the floor.

Local television station AT5 published eyewitnesses as saying around 20 shots were fired. Police said the area has been cordoned off and the incident, which occurred at around 7.15 pm, was being investigated.
