12th October 2022
The Eastern Regional Command of Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has charged District and Municipal officers in the area to intensify surveillance to combat foreigners engaged in illegal mining, cyber crime and terrorist activities.
The newly posted Regional Commander, DCO1 Faisal Disu who announced this when addressing the officers said even though security has been tightened at the borders, it is imperative for same to be done in the inner cities to smoke out illegal immigrants who take advantage of unapproved routes to enter the country to commit crimes such as cyber ,illegal mining and terrorism.
According to him, the political instability and extremists activities in the sub-region must be a wake up call for the Immigration officers to step up its duties.
He explained that despite clamping down on foreigners engaging in illegal mining, there may be more others including Chinese and west African Nationals engaging in the devasting mining activities.
The Regional Commander noted that the Immigration Service has also taken keen note of activities of West African Nationals in the region defrauding people under the guise of Network marketing company Qnet which he is committed to deal with them.
He also drew the attention of the officers to surge in cyber crime mostly being committed by Nigerians who have escaped to the Ghana due to a crackdown on their activities in Nigeria.
He stated that even though the service has some logistical challenges, it has enough men in the region to deal with the problems diagnosed.
However, he urged the general public to cooperate with the service by providing timely information about foreigners without approved document to work.
