President Akufo-Addo’s nomination of Jean Mensa as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC) has been approved by the Council of State.

A week ago, the President nominated Jean Mensa to replace Charlotte Osei who was axed from the post earlier this month.

She was nominated together with three other persons, who are also set to replace Amadu Sulley and Georgina Opoku Amankwah as deputy EC Chairs.

Charlotte Osei and her deputies were dismissed from office for incompetence and breaching of procurement laws in the award of several contracts, prior to the 2016 elections.

But the nomination of Jean Mensa as the new EC Chairperson was subject to approval from the Council of State before they could finally assume post.

However, Accra-based Starr FM reports that the Council of State has approved President Akufu-Addo’s nominations.

According to the report, sources at Jubilee disclosed that the president was expected to swear them in today following the approval but the ceremony has been re-scheduled to a later date.

Also nominated for consideration as deputies are a political science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Eric Asare Bossman; Ms Adjoa Esuama Abrefa, a corporate legal practitioner with specialisation in land property acquisition, and Samuel Tettey, Director of Electoral services in charge of elections at the Electoral Commission, whose nominations have been reportedly approved.
