Election 2024: Peace Council confident NDC will sign Peace Pact despite reservations
23rd August 2024
The National Peace Council has expressed optimism that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) will eventually sign the peace pact ahead of the December elections, despite the party’s reservations.
The NDC earlier made specific conditions it believes must be addressed before committing to the peace agreement. National Chairman Asiedu Nketia has voiced scepticism about the effectiveness of previous peace pacts, arguing that they have not delivered the expected outcomes.
However speaking to the media, Dr Ernest Adu-Gyamfi, Chairman of the National Peace Council said “The NDC has not said categorically that they won’t sign. They have given out some grievances and we will meet with them and we will talk about those things and then we will resolve them.”
“I don’t think that it is something that we should split our heads over. Our doors are always open. We work with the parties, we talk with them. And so we listen to them, we find a way to talk and find solutions to some of these grievances.”
“The ones that are within our capacity, we will do them. Some of them are not within our control and there is nothing that the Peace Council itself can handle. We hope that they will sign.”
