Serie A side Empoli have announced that Ghana midfielder Afriyie Acquah suffered a thigh injury during Friday's league match against Sassuolo.

At MAPEI Stadium - Citta del Tricolore, there was nothing but disappointment for the 26-year-old who had to be substituted as early as on 14 minutes in the 3-1 away defeat.

It was just his fifth game for The Blues following a loan transfer from Torino in August.

"Empoli FC announce that the tests carried out today on the athlete Afriyie Acquah following a muscle problem suffered yesterday during the match against Sassuolo showed a grade one injury to the left biceps femoris muscle," the club announced.

"The appropriate treatment has already started."

That the injury is grade one would be some relief for Empoli as Acquah could return to action as early as in a matter of days.

A possible lengthy time in the treatment room, however, could see the Ghanaian miss Thursday's league clash with AC Milan, the September 30 trip to Parma and the October 6 welcome of AS Roma.

That would also be bad news for Ghana who would be hoping to count on the Accra-born for their 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying double-header against Sierra Leone next month.
