The only wooden structure used for dining and assembly activities at Nana Brentu Senior High Technical School in Enchi, in the Aowin Municipality of the Western North Region, has been destroyed by a heavy rainstorm.

As a result of the intense downpour that happened on Thursday, May 16, 2024, the school's assembly activities have been suspended.

The entire wooden structure, which was already in a horrible state, was torn down during the Thursday evening storm.

Before the most recent storm, the students found it difficult to gather in the makeshift structure for assembly or dining purposes, which made the issues with Nana Brentu Dining Hall worse during rainy weather. Occasionally, students were forced to eat in their dormitories out of concern that they would get wet inside the building.

With around 2,000 students enrolled, the Nana Brentu Senior High Technical School is the sole second-cycle institution in the Municipality.

In response to the devastation, the headmaster of Nana Brentu SHTS, Mr. Sylvester Bekoe, stated that the students have suffered a tremendous deal because the building was used for more than just dining and assembly functions.

“The entire wooden structure has been ripped off, it served as a dining hall, assembly hall, church hall, PLC hall, classrooms and all social gatherings were done there. The community, other schools, and education office do come there for programmes,” he said.

He said that the students are now compelled to eat in their dorms and unauthorized places, putting them at risk.

He appealed for the government's immediate action to resolve the critical situation.

As they joined the plea for help, the students themselves emphasized the storm's severe damage and urged the government to provide urgent assistance.

According to the students, the absence of a modern dining facility at the school is impeding the efficient operation of academic programs.

“One of the main issues we are currently facing here is a dining hall complex. Both assembly and dining took place in this collapsed structure. Every time it rained, we had problems. Sometimes when we were eating, we became wet,” one student said.

Another added, “It was tough for us to even carry the meals from the kitchen to this wooden assembly hall during a downpour.”

They made a plea for funding for the school's dining and assembly halls from the government, NGOs, philanthropists, and other well-meaning Ghanaians.

They begged the government, NGOs, philanthropists, and other well-meaning Ghanaians to provide funds for the school's dining and assembly buildings.

“We are begging the government to consider Nana Brentu Senior High Technical School and to at least give us a dining hall or assembly hall,” a female student pleaded.
