Energy Minister reaffirms commitment to investing in power distribution
21st April 2026
The Minister of Energy and Green Transition, Dr John Jinapor, has joined President John Dramani Mahama to inspect distribution transformers being deployed across the operational areas of the Northern Electricity Distribution Company.
The Minister reaffirmed government’s commitment to investing in the power distribution chain, noting that the segment has suffered years of underinvestment. He said the ongoing intervention is aimed at easing pressure on the network, improving voltage stability, and reducing outages across northern Ghana.
The inspection comes as NEDCo rolls out a comprehensive maintenance and system upgrade programme to improve power reliability. The initiative, already underway in Tamale and nearby communities, includes transformer replacements and broader network enhancements to address low voltage challenges and frequent outages.
According to the company, the programme follows an extensive assessment of the distribution network, which identified key infrastructure gaps and operational constraints affecting service delivery.
Priority works include vegetation control along 78 feeders, upgrades to overloaded substations, and the replacement of faulty and overburdened transformers.
At the Berekum Primary Substation, a new 20/26 MVA transformer is being installed to replace an overloaded 10 MVA unit, with similar upgrades planned for the Wa Primary Substation.
In addition, the Ghana Grid Company is installing a 66 MVA transformer at the Techiman Bulk Supply Point to enhance capacity.
To further strengthen the distribution network, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition is procuring 500 transformers for deployment in affected communities.
NEDCo has indicated that temporary power outages may occur during the maintenance period to ensure the safety of personnel and equipment, with prior notice to be communicated through its official channels.
The company reiterated government’s commitment to improving electricity supply reliability, noting that the ongoing interventions are expected to significantly enhance power distribution across the northern sector.
The statement was signed by Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communication.
