A 41-year-old businessman, Ebenezer Sarpong, has been arraigned by the Ghana Medical and Dental Council for allegedly posing as a medical doctor and practising medicine and dentistry without a valid licence.

Sarpong, said to be a trained Physician Assistant from a private university in Accra, is also accused of illegally receiving payment for medical services in violation of the Health Professions Regulatory Bodies Act, 2013 (Act 857).

He has pleaded not guilty to charges of:

  • Falsely using the title “Dr.”

  • Practising or professing to practise medicine or dentistry without registration

  • Receiving payment for unauthorised medical practice

The court, presided over by Susana Eduful, granted him bail of GH₵50,000 with two sureties justified with landed property. The case has been adjourned to December 10, 2025.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Jonas Lawer, the complainant — the Administrative Manager for Complaints and Investigations at the Council — received intelligence that Sarpong was operating an illegal medical facility.

Sarpong, a resident of Mamprobi, owns the Good Care Medical Centre at Swalaba near Bukom, Accra.

During an undercover operation on August 14, 2025, officials discovered Sarpong practising medicine without authorisation. Four days later, the Council reported the matter to the Regional Police Command, leading to his arrest.

Police reportedly found Sarpong consulting patients, some of whom were on admission and others waiting for outpatient services.

During interrogation, Sarpong allegedly admitted in his caution statement that although he was a trained Physician Assistant, he had no licence to practise medicine. Further investigations confirmed that he had been using the title “Dr.” and charging patients for services, contrary to Act 857.

The Medical and Dental Council has urged the public to verify the credentials of health practitioners before seeking medical care, warning that unlicensed practice poses serious risks to public health and safety.
