The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has asked members of the Ghanaian public to offer it with any relevant information regarding suspected plastic rice on the market for appropriate action to be taken.

According to the head of communications, James Lartey, although the authority believes the plastic rice is not on the market as is being speculated on social media, members of the general public could still provide it with information if they happen to locate those behind the product.

“If you believe you have a sample of the plastic rice, let the FDA know.”

“We (FDA) will continue to do our work by being vigilant…” he said on Christmas day.

Last week, authorities in Nigeria seized 102 bags of plastic rice. The bags of ‘rice’ were intercepted by custom officials in Lagos before it found its way onto people’s plates during the festive season.

According to Haruna Mamudu, the head of the customs agency in Lagos, the seized product was very sticky after it had been boiled and could have caused health problems for unsuspecting consumers.

"Only God knows what would have happened [if this rice made its way to consumers]", he said.

Although it is unclear the origin of the plastic rice, suspicion has already fallen on China.
