Record-signing Andre Ayew has applauded West Ham United fans for their 'motivation and support' during a nightmarish time on the sidelines
.

The 26-year-old returned to the squad on Wednesday during their 2-1 win over Chelsea in the EFL Cup.

The Ghana international played a cameo role for the Hammers as they knocked out the Blues from the competition.

Ayew suffered a serious thigh injury just 34 minutes into his debut at Stamford Bridge in August.

But the Ghana vice-captain recovered quicker-than-expected to boost boost the side ahead of their Premier League games.

And he has showered praises on West Ham United fans, who provided inspiration during the difficult period.

"I'm so grateful for all the support I received and it definitely kept me driven to recover faster," Ayew wrote on his official Instagram page.

"I can't thank the medical staff of West Ham enough for the big role they played in getting me back into shape.

"Most importantly I want to thank my West Ham fans for standing by me and motivating me when I was down."

The former Marseille man is expected to get more game time when United travel to Everton this weekend.
