Flag of Western Togoland displayed at Volta Regional Coordinating Council
5th March 2020
A well-decorated flag with the emblem of secessionist group, Western Togoland is reported to have been flown at full mast at the grounds of Volta Regional Coordinating Council in the region.
The flag which was seen flying high was quickly pulled down by security personnel from the Volta Regional Police Command Thursday morning.
Their action was in direct defiance to government as the premises serves as the operating office of the regional minister.
Citinewsroom reports that the police officers pulled down the flag supposedly belonging to the group at 8.30 with officials Coordinating Council yet to make any public comment on the matter.
Officially known as The Homeland Study Group Foundation (HSGF), the group, led by 85-year-old Komi Kudzordzi, announced its separation on their official social media handles on Saturday, November 16, after a meeting held in the Volta Regional capital, Ho.
Their major concern was for government to separate some parts of the country so they declare it an independent ’Western Togoland State’.
Citing a gaffe in the 2020 budget presented by Finance Minister Ofori Atta, which omitted roads in the Volta Region from government’s ‘Year of Roads’ plans, Mr. Kudzordzi declared the ’Western Togo Land’ independent saying” from midnight of November 16, 2019, entering into Sunday, November 17, 2019, we’re now Western Togoland state.”
“We’ve all witnessed what happened recently when we (Volta Region) were forgotten by the government in its budget. Can a parent forget about their children? We’re not their children, so they have forgotten about us,” he noted.
Some members of the secessionist group have been arrested several times with more still standing trial.
