Former president John Mahama has said that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will not abolish the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy when it assumes power after the 2020 elections,

Mahama, who was addressing NDC members at Koforidua as part of his five-day tour, denied a series media reports that had suggested that he was not in favour of "Free SHS" and that he might take some measure to curtail the programme if he won power.

Stressing that he fully supported "Free SHS", Mahama said his only problem was with the double track system being used to run the programme, according to a report by Peacefmonline.com.

The system, he said, could destroy the quality of education in the country.

“I know the benefits of education to the fortunes of development, and so NDC will provide the necessary infrastructure to accommodate all students at once,” the report quoted the former president as saying.

Mahama added that the NDC started the Free SHS programme with day students, and gradually provided the needed infrastructure to accommodate students.

For that reason, he said, it was wrong for Ghanaians to conclude that he was was determined to kick against it.

We however reported that Mahama once attacked the Free SHS policy, claiming that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) takes delight in promising Ghanaians the moon, but fails to deliver on its promises.
