George Afriyie calls for review of Otto Addo’s contract after AFCON 2025 failure

Former Ghana FA Vice President, George Afriyie has urged the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to review Black Stars head coach Otto Addo's contract following the team's failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Afriyie, a former vice president of the GFA, argued that qualification for AFCON was a crucial condition in Addo’s contract and that missing out on this target provides grounds for termination.
“Qualification to AFCON is one of the conditions that can warrant the termination of a contract. It is standard in these agreements, and failure to achieve that gives the FA every reason to terminate the contract,” Afriyie said in an interview with Graphic Sports.
While calling for Addo’s dismissal, Afriyie also emphasized the importance of evaluating the coach’s overall performance, including his management of the World Cup qualifiers, before any final decision is made.
“We need to evaluate the coach’s performance holistically, including his handling of the World Cup qualifiers, to determine whether he should stay or go,” he added.
The Black Stars will conclude their AFCON qualification campaign on Monday against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium, in what will be a dead-rubber match.
