Former Ghana international George Owu has called on Ghanaians to rally behind under-fire Black Stars head coach Otto Addo, despite criticism following the team’s poor performance in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

The Black Stars have had a tough campaign, losing two and drawing two of their first four matches. With only two points, they currently sit third in the standings ahead of the final round of qualifiers this month.

Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, now faces a must-win situation against already-qualified Angola and bottom-placed Niger, hoping that Sudan will drop points against the same teams to keep their hopes of qualifying for the 2025 AFCON in Morocco alive.

Owu, who had a distinguished career with Asante Kotoko and Ashantigold, urged Ghanaians to offer their full support to Otto Addo, recognizing the challenges the team faces but emphasizing the importance of unity in difficult times.

“Otto Addo is not new to the Black Stars as coach. Truth be told, all is not well with our national team, but I will implore Ghanaians to fight and support the coach to turn things around,” Owu said in an interview with Kessben FM.

The Black Stars will face Angola in Luanda on November 15, followed by a home match against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18, 2024.

Owu, who made 10 appearances for the national team and was part of the squad during the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations, believes that the team can still turn their fortunes around with the right backing.
