The Ghana Education Service (GES) has decided to suspend the compulsory GES-SIC Life Insurance Policy programme that was placed on all active members of staff of the service for a month.

This comes after protestation from a wide range of teacher unions and its membership across the country.

Teachers and members of staff of the GES were been deducted a monthly GH S 10 for an insurance policy from the State Insurance Company (SIC) this according to the teachers was pushed down their throat by the GES.

This is the second time the GES has suspended the policy which was introduced in 2018 to help improve the welfare of teachers in the country.

Speaking at a press conference Thursday 15th August 2019, the director general of the Ghana Education Service, Professor Kwasi Opoku-Amankwa says the suspension of the policy is only on a temporal basis and will be started September next month.

Stating that teachers who are not content with the policy can opt out by filling and submitting an exit form by at least close of the month August.

“As of 6th August, we have written formally to the Controller and Account-General to suspend the programme for August. We are suspending it for August. Subsequently, we will resume in September.

“All those who are not interested, we want them to come up and pick a form. After this month, any staff who does not come out to get his or name removed from the list, is deemed to be a member. However, at any point in time, if you want to exit, you can exit,” he said.

Head of the GES also disclosed that 34 out of the 252 staff have had their GH ¢10 per month contributions which was deducted as part of the policy, refunded to them.
