Michael Essien believes Ghana is better footballing country than Nigeria as the countdown for the 2017 African Nations Cup championship begins.

While speaking with the BBC, the former Chelsea midfielder says the Black Stars are a better side than the Super Eagles despite Ghana not winning the Nations Cup for over 30 years.

Ghana has not won the African Nations cup last in 1982 in Libya, whiles Nigeria was victors in 2013 under Late Stephen Keshi. The Super Eagles have however missed out in the following two editions including Gabon 2017.

”I think I was not yet born the last time we won the Nations Cup, but still we are better than Nigeria as far as football is concerned,” Essien told the BBC.

Michael Essien also revealed his top five nominees for the 2016 African footballer of the year award in which his former teammate at Chelsea John Obi Mikel was included. Others named were Victor Wanyama of Kenya, Aubameyang of Gabon, Riyad Mahrez of Algeria and Andrew Ayew of Ghana.
