The Ghanaian cedi has been named Africa’s best-performing currency in 2025, according to data from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) analyzing over 20 major currencies across the continent.

IMF figures reveal that the cedi strengthened by more than 40 percent against the US dollar over the year, outpacing all other African currencies tracked in the review.

Earlier in the year, some international media outlets and global financial institutions had ranked the cedi as the fourth-best-performing currency in Africa. However, the IMF’s full-year assessment now places Ghana at the top of the list.

Analysts have credited the cedi’s strong showing to measures introduced by the Bank of Ghana, alongside reforms implemented under the IMF-supported economic program.

By the close of 2025, the Bank of Ghana had accumulated nearly US$14 billion in international reserves, bolstering the cedi’s stability and investor confidence.

Sources suggest that the central bank may introduce further policy actions in 2026 to maintain and strengthen the cedi’s performance.
