A senior official at Accra Hearts of Oak has raised fresh concerns about the quality of football in the Ghana Premier League, warning that the competition risks further decline without urgent reforms.

Dr Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, a board member of the club, said the standard of play in the domestic league remains consistently poor despite ongoing scrutiny.

“I have been monitoring our local league, and the standard of play remains very low,” he told Graphic Sports.

His remarks echo growing unease among fans and stakeholders about the competitiveness of a league that was once seen as a key breeding ground for some of Ghana’s finest football talents.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe pointed to what he described as deep-rooted structural problems undermining the game, including weak player development pathways, declining coaching quality and inconsistencies in officiating.

He warned that failure to address these issues could further erode both the league’s local appeal and its international standing.

The comments come at a time when Ghanaian clubs have struggled to make an impact in continental competitions, fuelling debate over the strength of domestic football.

Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe stressed that rebuilding the league’s credibility would require long-term investment in youth development, improved infrastructure and stricter adherence to professional standards.

Observers say his intervention is likely to intensify calls for comprehensive reforms aimed at restoring the prestige of Ghana’s top-flight football.
